On Sept. 30, 1984, the UCLA Alumni Association gave campus one of its most iconic landmarks, “The Bruin” statue on Bruin Plaza. The gift of the bronze statue, which is 10 feet long, 6 feet tall, 3 feet across and weighs more than 2 tons, commemorated the 50th anniversity of the alumni association.
A crowd of nearly 1,000 alumni attended the gift presentation.
The statue cost $37,000 to cast and another $10,000 for the artist Billy Fitzgerald’s fee.
