Under the Gavel: Supreme Court’s Most Recent Term in Review

This summer, the Supreme Court will make what are sure to be momentous (and controversial) decisions on presidential firing power, transgender athletes and birthright citizenship, among other hot-button issues. To discuss this crucial national institution and its role in this fraught political climate, the Hammer Museum at UCLA has put together an all-star panel of academics, lawyers and former politicians to explore its significance in American life. The agenda will cover everything from campaign financing to tariffs. Co-presented with the Safeguarding Democracy Project at UCLA Law, this Hammer Forum is free, with no reservation required.
THROUGH SUMMER
JAMAC: Art, Community and Collective Transformation

A special piece of São Paolo is coming to the Fowler Museum at UCLA this summer. The Jardim Miriam Arte Clube (JAMAC) is a Brazil-based collective merging art, education and activism to amplify community voices creating social change against legacies of colonialism. JAMAC uses murals, prints and public art to spark conversations about public issues like housing rights and environmental justice. This summer, JAMAC extends its messages beyond Brazil — and into the Fowler Museum — with a set of murals suggesting how vibrant colors embody the energy and voices behind social justice movements. See it for yourself, along with the rest of the Fowler’s rotating exhibits, for free on campus. No tickets required.

Exhibition Highlights Tours: Several Eternities in a Day

Avocado, clay, stone, cacao, adobe and bone. These are the raw materials helping make the Hammer’s summer showing, Several Eternities in a Day, an exhibition centered on how contemporary art derives form from living, breathing materials. The exhibition is built on three acts, each emphasizing the ephemerality of art in the Americas made by Indigenous and brown creators. Each Saturday summer afternoon, an expert Hammer docent will lead a free guided tour of Several Eternities in a Day. The tours are rooted in conversation, giving attendees an informed introduction to the featured artists, diverse materials and the exhibition at large. Don’t miss this exhibition before it closes on August 23 — no RSVP needed for the tours or entry to the Hammer Museum itself.

Jurassic Park at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery
This Fourth of July, come celebrate American independence and great Bruin filmmaking at the historic Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Though the storied venue is best known as a resting place for Golden Age Hollywood legends such as Judy Garland and Cecil B. DeMille, the cemetery is also famous for its fun, occasionally raucous BYOB (bring your own blanket) movie nights. This Independence Day, the cemetery presents Jurassic Park, a film written by David Koepp ’84 (Mission: Impossible and the original Spider-Man) and scored by John Williams ’53 (Star Wars, Jaws, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, Harry Potter). Come see a Bruin-made classic that brings the dead back to life (don’t worry, we’re talking about the dinosaurs) for a classic movie night under the stars. And the thrills continue after the film with a Fourth of July fireworks spectacular. Stock up on your popcorn, get your tickets — and we’ll see you there.

Fowler Artist Workshop: Natural Dye Eco-Printing

Textile artist Caitlin Parker has the witchy ability to turn vibrant flowers into vivid silk scarves. Her process is not exactly magic; it’s just rooted in her experience as a skilled artisan, natural dyer, gardener and certified California naturalist whose work explores the relationship between art and ecology. The Fowler Museum has invited Parker to share her techniques and knowledge of eco-art: She’ll be teaching participants lessons including which plants produce brilliant results, how to derive dyes and inks from organic matter, and how to make the creative practice accessible using materials gathered from gardens, neighborhoods and everyday landscapes. By the end of the afternoon, each participant will not only know how to make vibrant witchy brews, but each will also have made their own hand-dyed silk scarf and inked paper made from locally foraged oak galls, a crab-apple-sized growth made from wasp stings. Presented in partnership with Textile Arts L.A. and drawing inspiration from the Fowler’s current exhibition highlighting women’s artistry, this workshop brings art, ecology, sustainability and craft together in a way that is — dare we say — a little magical. Reserve and purchase your spot ($140 for nonmembers, $150 for members) by contacting Kathy DiGenova, manager of the Fowler Museum store, via email at [email protected].
AUGUST 6–20 | 8 P.M.

West Coast jazz goes by another name: cool jazz. It’s a subgenre characterized by its mellow sound, its origins in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and its pioneers looking for a relaxing alternative to East Coast bebop. The Hammer Museum celebrates this cool-as-a-cucumber sound in its 2026 edition of JazzPOP, the jazz concert series showcasing a cross-generational kaleidoscope of creative West Coast music. San Francisco-based saxophonist Kasey Knudsen starts the series with her sextet, tackling the challenges of traditional West Coast jazz composition; the Malachi Whitson Quartet leads the second jazz session, incorporating West African polyrhythms and Afro-Caribbean grooves. The Machado Mijiga Trio closes the series with its signature eclecticism, drawing from all corners of West Coast jazz fusion to include electronic and synthesized jazz. Come be cool for the summer with any (or all!) of these performances at the Hammer. No tickets or reservations required.
JULY 5–19

Haven’t been able to make it to the genuine article at SoFi Stadium? Don’t worry — the Hammer Museum is here to help LA soccer fans still get their fix for the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. There’s still time to join fellow “football” enthusiasts in the Hammer courtyard, where matches take over the big screens. Come together and cheer on your favorite teams during those electric 90 minutes on the pitch, then spend time between matches exploring free exhibitions, shopping in the museum store, or grabbing a bite or drink at the Hammer’s acclaimed restaurant, Lulu. July’s matches begin with the tournament’s round of 16, as the World Cup whittles down the advancing teams from the original 48. Admission is first-come, first-served — plan ahead and let the Hammer know you’re coming with an RSVP.
AUGUST 7–15

See what men’s soccer is all about before the official home opener on August 24 (against CSU Bakersfield) and get ready for another fabulous year of UCLA Athletics.
