UCLA is ranked the No. 2 public university in the United States according to the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2019, which were released today. In addition, UCLA placed No. 9 among all universities — public or private — in the world.

The rankings are based on a survey distributed to published scholars representing all academic disciplines. The questionnaire asked respondents to share their opinions regarding excellence in research and teaching within their disciplines and at institutions with which they are familiar. The 2019 results are based on a total of 11,554 responses from 135 countries. The survey was conducted between November 2018 and February 2019.

The data will be used alongside 11 objective indicators to determine this year’s Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020, which will be published in September 2019.

Among U.S. public universities, UCLA was behind only UC Berkeley, which was No. 6 overall.

Regardless of methodology, UCLA consistently performs well in multiple rankings that use a wide range of criteria.

In 2018, UCLA was named the No. 1 U.S. public university in both the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges ranking and Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education survey. In addition, UCLA was ranked the No. 1 college for transfer students by Money. UCLA was also named the No. 2 U.S. public universities (17 overall) by Times Higher Education in its 2019 World University Rankings and No. 3 American public university (13 overall) in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities ranking.
