Charles E. Young M.A. ’57, Ph.D. ’60 was the longest-serving chancellor in the history of the UC system. Upon his death in October at age 91, he left behind an incredible legacy at UCLA.

He led UCLA for almost 29 years, the longest tenure of any chancellor in the University of California system. In its obituary, the Los Angeles Times described him as “a commanding figure who came to be recognized as a superb manager with an exceptionally quick mind.” Here, some of the most memorable moments in the tenure of a leader who guided UCLA’s transformation into a world-class research university.
